Get-go is a noun, but it almost never stands alone. People say from the get-go, and they mean from the very first moment — before anything else has happened. It is informal spoken English. It showed up in 1960 in an African American newspaper in Baltimore, already inside that phrase, and then spread through American speech into offices, sport, and the news: “I knew from the get-go that this would fail.” It does the same job as from the beginning or from the word go, but it feels punchier and more American. You would not reach for it in a stiff essay unless you want that spoken flavour. Some people now write from the get go with no ; dictionaries still prefer get-go.
