A geranium is a garden plant. The ones most people picture have round leaves and clusters of red, pink, or white flowers, often in a pot on a balcony. Though actually, the plant English speakers buy as a “geranium” is often a pelargonium — a close cousin. True geraniums (sometimes called cranesbill) and pelargoniums got mixed up in ordinary talk a long time ago, and garden shops still use geranium for both. Formal keeps the two names apart; everyday English mostly does not. The Greek name came from the word for crane: the seed pod is long and pointed, like a crane’s .
