A geophysicist is a person whose job is : the study of how parts of the Earth move, and the forces involved — the ground, the oceans, the weather as a physical system, quakes, magnets, and the inside of the planet. They measure, model, and try to explain those forces, often with instruments and maths. You will hear the word in science news, oil and water work, earthquake research, and universities. It is a job title, not a feeling and not a method. Though actually the edges of the job are messy: one geophysicist may live in earthquake , another in ocean currents, another in the planet's magnetic field, and people still use the same job name.

組成geo- (earth) + physicist (a person who studies physics). The physics half goes back to a Greek word for nature. So this is a person who studies the physics of the Earth.
