This is the ability a computer or a phone has to work out — and often show — where it is being used on Earth right now. Your map app, a weather app that already knows your city, a photo that remembers “taken in Tainan”: that is geolocation at work. The machine can use several clues. GPS satellites are the famous one, but a phone also looks at nearby Wi-Fi names, cell towers, and sometimes the network address. All of that together is geolocation: finding the place of the device. Though actually, people say GPS for almost all of this, even when the phone is not really using the satellites. The word also has a colder side: shops, apps, and police can use it to follow where a device (and so, often, a person) has been. In everyday talk in Taiwan you will hear 定位 much more than this English word. Geolocation shows up in settings, privacy pages, and tech news.
