If a man is gentlemanly, he speaks and behaves and treats other people with respect. It can describe the man, or just the act: a gentlemanly apology, a gentlemanly silence. It is also an adverb: he back gentlemanly, though gentlemanly as an adverb is less common now than in a gentlemanly way. The word still lives, but it carries an old ideal of how a man 'should' behave — opening doors, not raising his voice, not taking advantage. Though actually, people use it for the behaviour, not only for rich men: a poor person can be gentlemanly, and a rich one can fail at it. Some speakers now feel the word is a bit dated, or too tied to men, and will say polite or respectful instead.
組成From gentleman + -ly. In Middle English it was already gentilmanly, used both as an adjective and as an adverb.
