A genie is a magical spirit from old Middle Eastern stories, often shown living inside a lamp or a bottle. In the stories, if you rub the lamp, the genie appears and grants you wishes — usually three. People sometimes say "the genie is out of the bottle" to mean that something has been started or revealed and now can't be stopped or hidden again.

組成From Arabic "jinn," a spirit in Arabic folklore — the English spelling and pronunciation changed over time, partly influenced by the Latin word "genius."
