Geneva is a city in the west of Switzerland, on a large lake that shares its name, Lake Geneva. It is not the capital — that is Bern — but it is one of the most important cities in the world for international work. The Red Cross has its main base there, and so does the World Health Organization; many other UN and world groups sit in Geneva too. People go there for talks between countries as much as for the lake and the mountains. In English we say it je-NEE-vuh. Though actually, there is a second, now rather rare English word geneva that means a kind of gin, from Dutch genever (“”). That is not this city; it only looks the same on the page. Students also mix Geneva with Genoa, which is a different city, in Italy. When you see Geneva in the news, it is almost always the Swiss city and the organisations that live there.
組成The city name is very old. Romans wrote it Genava. It probably comes from a Celtic word related to “knee,” for a bend in a river or shore. The gin called geneva is a different word, from Dutch genever, only later made to look like the city name.
