Gelignite is a powerful explosive, a jelly-like blasting stuff used to break rock in mines and quarries and to knock down buildings. It belongs with dynamite: nitroglycerin mixed so that it stays in a gel, which is safer to handle than the raw liquid. Workers pack it into holes in rock and set it off with a detonator. The word is technical and a little old-fashioned; older British news and reports use it a lot. Ordinary people now more often say dynamite or just explosives. You will not meet it in kitchen English, even though it looks as if it shared a shelf with .
