A GED is a set of tests in the United States and Canada. If you left high school without finishing, you can take the GED instead. Passing it is treated as equal to a high school diploma — enough, in many places, to apply for a job or to go on to college. It is not a school you attend; it is the exam, and then the certificate you hold. The letters stand for General Educational Development, though actually almost nobody says the long form out loud. People say “I got my GED” the way someone else says “I finished high school.” It is a North American thing. Taiwan has its own exams for people who study on their own, but those are not called GED, and a GED does not automatically stand in for a Taiwan diploma. You usually hear it letter by letter: G-E-D.
