1. 1

A gecko is a small lizard. Many kinds have special toes, so they can walk up a smooth wall and even across a ceiling. In Taiwan you meet them at night on the wall, hunting insects near a light, and they make a little clicking or chirping sound. People sometimes lump them in with any small lizard, but the ones that stick to the bathroom wall are geckos. The word is just the ordinary name — not slang, not extra-formal. Some people keep them as pets. There are many kinds; the common house ones are tiny, and a few wild kinds are much bigger, but they are still geckos.

組成The modern English word was probably borrowed from Dutch gekko (1718). Around the same time English also had chacco (1711) and jackoa (1724). The next step back is not settled. Some sources mention a supposed Malay word copying the animal’s chirp; another theory takes it from Acehnese gèh-gòh, “busy”.
