Gdansk is a city and port on Poland’s Baltic coast. For a long time the world knew it by its German name, Danzig; after the Second World War it was Polish, and Gdansk is the name to use now. It is famous for its shipyards. In 1980, workers there, led by Lech Walesa, began the trade union Solidarity, which pushed the Communist government to give ground and later became a mark of the end of that system in Poland. The old town and the cranes of the yard still carry that story. English usually writes Gdansk without the Polish mark on the n (Gdańsk). Say it as a place name, not as letters.
