GCHQ is a British government body based in Cheltenham. Its quiet job is to collect information that may matter to national safety, especially by listening to and reading electronic signals — radio, phone calls, internet traffic — from around the world, and by breaking codes. It is one of Britain’s main intelligence services, beside MI5 (security at home) and MI6 (secret work abroad). GCHQ is the listening and cyber one. People who work there are often not allowed to say much; the public knows the doughnut-shaped office and the letters better than the daily work. British news just says GCHQ, letter by letter. It is not a company and not a school exam, even though the letters can look like one more British abbreviation in a textbook.
