GCE is the General Certificate of Education, a British school exam system that used to cover two big steps: O-level (ordinary level) around sixteen, and A-level (advanced level) around eighteen. In England and Wales, GCE O-levels were replaced by GCSEs in 1988. A-levels did not disappear; they are still officially GCE Advanced Level, though almost everyone just says A-level. When an older British person says “I did my GCE”, they often mean those old O-levels. The name is formal and a bit dated for the sixteen-year-old exam; newspapers now say GCSE for that stage. Taiwan students on a British path will hear A-level far more than GCE, but the old letters still sit on certificates and in family stories. It was an England-and-Wales (and similar) school thing, not a world-wide test brand like some people think.
