To gauge something means to measure it or make a careful guess about it, especially something that's hard to measure exactly, like people's feelings. 'Let's gauge how the customers feel about this' means 'let's try to find out.' As a noun, a gauge is also a tool or dial that measures something, like a fuel gauge in a car that shows how much gas is left, or a rain gauge that measures rainfall.
