A gasworks is a factory where people used to make gas from coal, so homes and streets could have heat and light. You will mostly meet the word in history, on old maps, and in place names. In older British English, works can mean a plant or factory (as in waterworks), and this one is usually written as one word. It looks plural but often names one place: the old gasworks. Though actually almost nobody makes town gas from coal like that now; we burn natural gas from underground instead. Do not mix it up with a petrol station (US gas station) — that is a different “gas”.
