A gasometer is another word for a : that huge round tank, often with a metal frame, that stores town gas or natural gas before take it to buildings. The name sounds like a measuring tool, because -meter so often means “measurer”, and in careful lab talk a gasometer can also be a piece of kit that measures gas. But in ordinary city English, especially British English, people mean the big tank you can see from far away. The word came in from French gazomètre. It feels old now; people still use it because those round frames became landmarks. Same warning as : this is cooking-and-heating gas, not petrol.

組成From French gazomètre, built as gaso- (“gas”) + -meter (“measurer”). English borrowed the whole word. The -meter is the same piece as in thermometer, even though a city gasometer is mostly a store, not a measuring stick.
