Gasohol is petrol with a little alcohol mixed in, so a car can still burn it. The alcohol is usually the kind made from plants. The mix is often about one tenth alcohol and the rest petrol. People made the word in the United States, where gas already means petrol; they wanted a fuel that could stretch the petrol and, in some years, cost less at the pump. It is a news-and-industry word, not something you ask for by name at every station. In many places the same idea is just sold as ordinary petrol with a quiet label such as E10. Though actually, “cheaper” is not always true: the price depends on the year, the country, and the price of the plants used to make the alcohol. Do not hear gas in this word and think of cooking gas.
