A gash is a large, deep cut — not a little scratch. You can have a gash in skin, in wood, in the side of a boat, in the ground. It looks open and ugly; if it is in a person, it often bleeds a lot. News and doctors like this word because it tells you the cut is serious. People also use it as a verb: to gash something is to cut it deeply, usually by accident — a knife gashes a finger, a rock gashes a tyre. It is everyday English, a bit rough, not fancy. You would not call a tiny paper cut a gash; that would sound as if you were making a big drama of a small thing.

組成The word does not split into pieces you can see. It is a later shape of older English garsh, from Middle English garsen, from Old French garser / jarsier (Modern French gercer, “to crack or chap”). That came from Vulgar Latin charaxāre, “to scratch or engrave”, from Ancient Greek kharaktḗr, “engraver”.
