A gasbag is someone who talks too much, especially with a lot of empty air — opinions, stories, promises — and not much substance. The picture is a bag stuffed with gas, hot air instead of anything solid. It is informal and not polite: you might say it about a boring speech-maker among friends; you would not put it in a thank-you letter. Though actually there is also a technical sense, the bag that holds gas in a balloon or , but this everyday use is the , and that is the one people mean when they roll their eyes.
