A gardenia is a flower: large, usually creamy white, with thick and a very sweet, heavy smell. It grows on a bush, not on a tall tree, and people plant it by doors and in pots because the scent is strongest in the evening. In some places a single gardenia is worn at a formal dance. Though actually, the English name is not “a flower from the garden.” It is a plant name built from a person’s name. The flower you already know in Taiwan as 梔子花 is this kind of plant.

組成Borrowed from the scientific name Gardenia, given in honour of the Scottish naturalist Dr Alexander Garden. The ending -ia is the usual Latin-style ending for plant names after people.
