A garbled statement, message, or report is so mixed up that you cannot follow it. Words may be in the wrong order, key bits may be missing, or the sound may be broken — a bad phone line, a rushed translation, a passed along too many times. The facts feel scrambled, not merely difficult. It is a common, slightly word in news and daily talk: “the message was garbled,” “a garbled account.” Though actually, it does not mean “full of garbage,” and it has nothing to do with clothes (that is garb). It is about the signal coming through wrong.

組成This is the usual -ed form of the verb garble, “to mix up a message.” That verb once meant to sift, as with spices (from Italian garbellare, and before that Arabic). The meaning moved from “sift and pick” to “mix so badly that the sense is lost.”
