A garbanzo is a chickpea: the small, round, bean with a little bump, mild and nutty, that we mash for hummus or toss into salads and soups. Though actually, this is mainly an American English name. In the US you will see garbanzo beans on tins, menus, and recipes; in British English the same food is almost always called a chickpea. Same plant, two labels. People also say garbanzo beans, not just garbanzo. It is an ordinary food word, not fancy, but it still sounds “American supermarket” to many ears.

組成From Spanish garbanzo. English first borrowed it in the 1600s as garvance, then as calavance, used for chickpeas and sometimes other beans. In the 1800s the Spanish form garbanzo came back, mostly through American Spanish, and that is the form US English kept.
