If you are gap-toothed, you have a clear space between two teeth, most often the front ones. It names only that space. It is not the same as (teeth that stick out) and not the same as a tooth that has just fallen out. Some people are born with a gap; some get one because a tooth is small or the jaw is wide. Many people like the look; it is not automatically a fault. Though actually, the older English was gat-tothed, 'gate-toothed', as if the gap were a little gate, and gap later took the place of gate in the compound. Chaucer even treated a gap in the teeth as a sign of a bold, loving nature. That is old story-telling about character, not a fact about teeth.
組成From Middle English gap tothed, an alteration of earlier gat-tothed (literally “gate-toothed”), equivalent to gap + toothed.
