In old Greek stories, Ganymede was a very beautiful young boy. Zeus, king of the gods, took him up to Mount Olympus — the tales say Zeus came as an eagle, or sent one — to pour wine for the gods. That job is serving the cup. Though actually, the tidy school line ('he got work as a wine waiter') is tidier than the story people told: Zeus took him because he wanted the boy, and for centuries writers used the name as a quiet way to talk about a man keeping a boy. That is not kind, and it is not a joke; say so if a student only heard the waiter version. Later, sky-watchers gave the same name to Jupiter's largest moon, so in a science class Ganymede is usually that moon, named after this boy. The Greek pieces mean something like 'meant to please' — to rejoice, plus thought or intention.
