A gantry is a big, strong frame, usually of steel, that stands over something so heavy kit can hang from it or sit on it. You see gantries over holding the large road signs, over railway lines holding the lights that tell a train to stop or go, and in docks or factories where a crane runs along the top. A rocket may stand inside a launch gantry before it flies. It is an engineering word, not a name for a clothes horse or a picture frame. Though actually, the older form was gauntree, a wooden stand — possibly a 'gallon-tree' for barrels, or a French word for a frame that people later heard as tree. The huge metal thing we mean now grew from that smaller idea of a stand.
組成From earlier gauntree, possibly from dialectal gaun (“gallon”) + tree, perhaps as a reinterpretation of Middle English *gaunter, from Old Northern French gantier, from Late Latin cantarium, from Latin canterius (“trellis, sort of frame”).
