Ganja is a word for the dried leaves and flowers of the cannabis plant that people smoke or eat to change how they feel — the same thing many speakers call marijuana or weed. Though actually, you will hear ganja most in Jamaican English, reggae songs, and Rastafarian talk, where it is the ordinary, almost respectful name for the plant, not a dirty joke. A doctor, a judge, or a Taiwan news reader will say cannabis or marijuana instead; ganja is informal and cultural. It does not mean the hemp used to make rope, even though it is the same plant family. In Taiwan the drug is illegal, so this is a word you may meet in music and films more than in daily life.
