A gangmaster is the person in charge of a large group of labourers who do hard outdoor work — picking fruit, working on farms, that kind of job. In Britain the word is used in a quite special way: the workers are often from other countries, and some of them may not have official permission to work there. The gangmaster organises the crew, and often also finds the people, moves them, and pays them. You will see it in British news and law, not as a name for a normal office boss. Though actually, after some terrible accidents, Britain made rules about who may be a gangmaster at all. It is not gangster: there is no film “crime family” in the picture, even when the work is unfair or against the law.
