The Ganges is a very long river that runs across northern India and on into Bangladesh, where it waters huge fields of rice and other crops. To Hindus it is not only a river but a holy being; many travel to its banks and wash themselves in the water, and the dead are often brought there. In India people also call it Ganga, which is the older name. English borrowed a Latin-and-Greek form of that name, which is why our spelling and sound are a little different. You will see the Ganges in geography books, news about floods or pollution, and stories of faith. It is always a place name, so it takes a capital letter. The water is real and muddy and used every day; the holiness sits on top of that ordinary fact, and both things are true at once.
