A gamine is a small, thin girl or woman who looks a bit like a boy — short hair, light body, a playful or street-smart face rather than a soft, “pretty doll” look. People also use gamine as an adjective: a gamine haircut, a gamine style. The word came from French, and in English it still feels a little fashion-magazine or film-talk, not everyday kitchen English. Think of a slim young woman with a pixie cut and a cheeky smile. Though actually, it is not the same as “tomboy,” which is more about how she acts and what she likes; gamine is more about how she looks. The male French word gamin is a street boy; gamine is the girl form that English borrowed.
