A gamelan is a traditional Indonesian orchestra, especially from Java and Bali. The heart of it is metal: bronze gongs, metallophones (like xylophones, but with metal bars), and drums, often with a shimmering, layered sound that does not follow Western harmony in a simple way. The word can mean the set of instruments, or the group of musicians who play them. It is not a single instrument you hold in your hands — it is the whole ensemble. In English we keep the Indonesian word; we do not translate it. You might meet it in a world-music class, in a documentary, or if you travel to Indonesia.
