A gamekeeper is a person whose job is to look after the wild animals and birds on private land so that they can be hunted — deer, , grouse, and so on. ‘Game’ here is an older English meaning: animals hunted for sport or food, not a board game and not a video game. Gamekeepers work mainly in the countryside, especially in Britain, on big estates. They may feed the birds, watch for illness, and also try to stop poachers (people who hunt without permission). It is a job title with a strong British, old-country flavour. Though actually, that same ‘game’ still lives on in phrases like game birds and big game.
