To gambol is to jump and run about in a happy, playful way — the way lambs do in a spring field, or children do when they are too to walk. It can also be a noun: a gambol is that kind of playful run. The verb is a little old-fashioned or literary; in everyday talk we more often say skip, bounce around, or run about. People and young animals gambol; cars and meetings do not. It has nothing to do with gambling, even though the two words sit close on the page, and it is not ‘game’ plus something.

組成From earlier English gambolde, from Middle French gambade (still gambade in modern French). The French word is a leap or caper.
