Gallipoli is a long, narrow piece of land in Turkey, on the north side of the — the strait of water that leads toward Istanbul. In 1915, during World War I, British, French, Australian and New Zealand soldiers tried to land there and push through. The Ottoman Turkish army held the hills and the coast. Many young men, especially from Australia and New Zealand, were killed. For those two countries the name is not just a place on a map: it is a wound and a national story, remembered every year on Anzac Day. The campaign failed. Though actually there is also a town in southern Italy called Gallipoli — same spelling, different place. This entry is the Turkish peninsula and that war.
組成Borrowed from Italian Gallipoli, from Turkish Gelibolu, from Byzantine Greek Kallípolis, from Ancient Greek kallos (beauty) + polis (city). The name once meant something like “beautiful city.” Doublet of Callipolis and Kallipolis.
