Something galling does not only you. It stings because it feels unfair. You did the work and someone else got the praise. A rule is soft on them and hard on you. That mix of anger and “this should not be” is the heart of the word. It is fairly careful English — a complaint you have thought about, a news story, an essay — more than a shout in the street. The picture underneath is rubbing a sore until it burns: the verb to gall is that rubbing, and the adjective followed from it.
