Your gait is the way you walk: the rhythm of your steps, how you hold your body, whether you limp, shuffle, or stride. Doctors watch a patient's gait to see if a hip, a nerve, or the inner ear is in trouble. Horse people use it constantly — walk, trot, and are different gaits, and some breeds have extra ones. It is a slightly formal, almost technical word; friends usually just say "the way he walks." In that horse world it can be a verb too: to gait a horse is to train or show the way it moves. People sometimes stretch it to mean a person's manner in general, but the walking sense is the one you will meet. It is not the same word as gate, the thing you open in a fence, though they are historical twins.
