Gaelic is a Celtic language — really a small family of them. Irish is the language of Ireland (people there often just say Irish, not Gaelic). Scottish Gaelic is spoken in parts of the Highlands and the . belongs with them too. They are cousins of Welsh and Breton, but not the same: a Welsh speaker and a Gaelic speaker do not simply understand each other. In everyday English, 'Gaelic' most often points to the Scottish kind, or to Irish as taught abroad. It is also an adjective: Gaelic football, Gaelic culture. The language is old and still living. It is not a dialect of English, though English has borrowed a few words from that world.
組成Gael + -ic. The ending -ic makes an adjective or a language name, as in Celtic.
