In the Bible, Gabriel is an — one of the highest angels — who carries messages from God to people on earth. In Christian teaching, God sent Gabriel to Mary to tell her she would be the mother of Jesus. In Islam, the same figure (often called Jibril) brought Allah’s words to Muhammad, and those words became the Quran. In pictures, artists often show Gabriel blowing a trumpet. Though actually, the story of Mary does not say he blew a horn; that picture grew later, especially around the idea of the last day. Gabriel is also a common boy’s name; Gabrielle is the usual girl’s form.
