A gabled house, or a gabled roof, is one that has one or more of those triangular wall-ends. If someone says “a gabled cottage”, they mean you can see that pointed shape, not just that the house has a roof. Though actually, “gabled roof” is a little loose — the roof , and the gable is the wall — but English speakers say it all the time and nobody blinks. The word is almost always about buildings and how they look from the outside.
