A G-string is a very small piece of underwear. At the front it covers the sex organs with a small triangle of cloth; at the back there is only a thin string that sits between the , so most of the bottom is bare. Dancers, models, and some people at the beach or in clubs wear them. As everyday underwear they feel more for show than for comfort, compared with ordinary pants. Though actually, people mix this word with thong: both are tiny at the back, but a G-string is usually even thinner — often just a string, not a strip of cloth. The name is old, from the 1800s. It may come from girdle-string, a string on a girdle around the waist, but nobody is sure, so that is only a guess. The same spelling can also mean a string on a violin or guitar that is tuned to the note G; that is a different thing, and the two meanings should not be treated as one story.
