A gâteau is a large, rather special cake, often in layers, filled and with cream, fruit, or chocolate. English borrowed the word from French, where it simply means cake; in English it feels a little fancy, more like a bakery window than a plain cake you bake on a Tuesday. You may see the little mark over the a (gâteau) or the plain spelling gateau. It is not a small cupcake, and it is not a dry . Bakeries sometimes keep the French name on the sign.
