FWIW stands for for what it is worth. You see it in emails, chats, and forum posts when someone wants to offer an idea but does not want to sound sure, or important. It is a polite shrink: I am not sure this helps, but here it is anyway. Though actually, people also use it when they do think they are right, and they want to sound modest. It is informal, and a little internet-flavoured; older office English used the full phrase more than the letters. You would not put FWIW in a school essay or a very formal letter. Read it as a soft push, not as a claim that the sentence is gold.
