A futon is a mattress for sleeping on, especially in the Japanese way: thick cloth you on the floor at night and can fold away by day. In Japan it is ordinary home , not a camping trick. In Western homes the same word often names a sofa that folds out into a bed, with a similar kind of mattress — so the thing in a student flat may not look like the thing in a Japanese bedroom, though people still call both a futon. It is a normal, everyday noun, not fancy and not slang. You sleep on a futon, fold a futon, put a futon away.

組成Borrowed from Japanese 布団 (futon). That Japanese word comes from Middle Chinese 蒲團 (a round meditation cushion of woven bulrush), from 蒲 (bulrush, cattail) + 團 (a round thing) — because the first cushions were round and woven. The sleeping mattress came later; the name stayed.
