A funfair is an outdoor place, often there for only a few days or weeks, where people ride machines, play games for prizes, and eat sweet, messy food. You hear loud music and see lights before you even reach the gate. The rides spin you or lift you; the games look easy and usually are not. This is mainly a British word. Americans more often say carnival for a travelling one, or amusement park if the rides stay in one place all year. Though actually, a huge permanent park with giant roller coasters is a bit grander than what funfair usually names — a funfair can be quite small, even a handful of rides in a field. Fair by itself can also mean a trade show or a farm show; funfair tells you it is the noisy, playful kind. It is written as one word.
