The fundamentals are the most important ideas, rules, or skills that something is built on — the base you have to get right before the fancy parts. In sport, teachers talk about “the fundamentals”: how you stand, how you pass. In a subject, they are the first ideas. This meaning is almost always plural. Though actually, people also say “back to fundamentals” when they mean “stop being clever and do the simple things well again.” It is not slang, but it is very common in coaching, class, and business.
