A fugue is a piece of music built around one small tune. The tune starts in one voice or one instrument, alone. Then another voice plays that same tune, often a little higher or a little lower, while the first voice keeps going with new notes. More voices can join. They seem to run after one another, in and out, in different keys. The name carries that picture: it was borrowed from French fugue, from Italian fuga, “flight,” from Latin fuga, “the act of fleeing,” from fugiō, “to flee.” The first part sets off on its course; the later parts chase it. Bach wrote many famous fugues. This is a serious, classical-music word. A pop song is almost never a fugue, even if a bit of the song copies the same idea for a few seconds. Though actually, doctors also use fugue for a rare state where a person leaves their ordinary life for a while and cannot remember — same spelling, very different meaning. This page is the music one.
