A frump is an name for a woman who looks old-fashioned and dull in her clothes — not 'in style', not trying to look fashionable. The word points at how she dresses, not at her work or her heart. It is old-fashioned itself now, and rather rude. Younger speakers more often say frumpy about the clothes or the look, and they may not use this noun at all. Though actually, it probably started around an old word for a , not around fruit or dump, even if the sound feels heavy and crumpled.

組成Probably a shortening of late Middle English frumpylle, 'wrinkle', from Middle Dutch verrompelen; originally like for- + rump + -le. The pieces are not clear in English today.
