    You do something fruitlessly when you keep trying and still get nothing. It is fruitless turned into a how-word: how you searched, waited, or argued. Same idea — much effort, no result — sitting on the verb. It sounds a little formal, like a story or a report, not like a quick complaint to a friend (who might just say 'for nothing').
