Frippery is a extra that does no real work — lace, trinkets, fancy bits added so a thing looks richer than it is. You can talk about fripperies, the objects, or frippery as a mass of that kind of stuff. The word is a little old-fashioned and a little : it says this looks pretty, and that is all it is. You will meet it more in books and pointed comments than in everyday chat. Though actually, people still reach for it when they want to dismiss fashion, ceremony, or extras as empty show.
