    This word almost never walks around on its own. In British English, if you put the frighteners on someone, you scare them on purpose so they will do what you want — pay, keep quiet, go away. The “frighteners” are the threats, or the people sent to make the threat feel real. You will not hear this much from Americans, and even in Britain it has a slightly old crime-story flavour. Though actually, people now use it as much in newspapers and jokes as in real gangster talk. Informal.
