A frieze is a band of decoration that runs along the top of a wall, inside a room or around a building. On old Greek and Roman buildings it is the middle strip high up, often with people, horses, or leaves. In a modern house it might be a painted strip, a wallpaper border, or a plaster pattern just below the ceiling. Architects and art teachers use the word; most people would just say “the decoration along the top of the wall.” There is an older second meaning — a rough wool cloth — but the sense here is the wall band. It is a quiet, slightly specialist word, not an everyday one.

組成Late Middle English, from French and Middle French frise. It probably comes from Medieval Latin Frisia, “Frisian,” because of wool brought on northern ships — or from French friser, “to curl.” Scholars are not sure which.
